Purpose

Some messages cannot go through the internet.

Choose a transfer method that suits your situation. Test it before sharing sensitive information.

  1. Nearby devices

Use sound or a screen when both phones are nearby.

  2. Sharing a photo

Place a message inside a photo. The service used to share it may alter the file.

  3. Protect your password

Use a strong password and give it to the recipient separately.

  4. Start with a test

Send a short, non-sensitive message first.

Three channels, one application

Choose the channel that fits the situation.

Taftan covers same-room transfer, screen-to-camera transfer and concealment inside a messaging platform. Every channel applies encryption before sending.

Examples

Choose a method for your situation.

These examples describe possible uses. Results depend on your devices and surroundings.

01Sound

Send short messages between nearby devices.

Problem

Noise and device hardware can prevent a transfer.

With Taftan

The sender plays the message and the receiver listens with the phone microphone. Start with both phones close together.

Outcome

Check that the recipient received the message.

02Screen and camera

Point one camera at the other screen.

Problem

Glare, movement and poor lighting can interrupt a transfer.

With Taftan

Keep the receiving camera steady and the sending screen visible until the transfer finishes.

Outcome

Check that the recipient received the message.

03Photo

Share a message inside a photo.

Problem

Editing or recompressing the photo can prevent recovery.

With Taftan

Choose a photo, enter the message and set a password. The recipient opens the photo in Taftan with the same password.

Outcome

Check that the recipient received the message.

04Password protection

Use a strong password for sensitive messages.

Problem

A weak password can be guessed.

With Taftan

Enable protection before sending. Share the password with the recipient separately from the message.

Outcome

Check that the recipient received the message.

Platform compatibility

Check how your sharing service handles files.

An altered file may not open correctly in Taftan. Test with non-sensitive content first.

What Taftan does and does not promise

Built-in commitments, honest limits.

Two short lists. One is what the application does by design. The other is what it cannot do, stated plainly so nobody learns about it the wrong way.

01

By design

  • No account is required.
  • Nearby sound and screen transfers do not need internet access.
  • You choose what to send and who receives it.
02

Hard limits

  • Sound is intended for short messages.
  • Screen transfers need a clear view of the sending screen.
  • A shared photo can be altered by another service.
  • A hidden message may be detectable.
  • Without protection, a captured transfer may reveal its contents.
  • A lost password cannot be reset.

Frequently asked questions

Technical and operational questions.

Answers organised from first principles to specific use cases.

01Does Taftan need internet access?

Nearby sound and screen transfers do not. Sharing a photo through another service depends on that service.

02How do I choose a method?

Use sound for short messages, a screen when the devices can face each other, or a photo when you need to share a file.

03What if a transfer fails?

Try a shorter message. Keep the devices steady and close together. For photos, try sharing the original file without editing it.

04What happens if I lose the password?

A protected message cannot be recovered without its password. There is no password reset.

05Can someone record a transfer?

Yes. Protect sensitive messages with a strong password and consider who can access either device.

06Will an observer be able to tell that a message is concealed?

Yes, a hidden message may be detectable in either mode. Do not rely on a photo to hide that a message exists.

07Where can I download Taftan?

Use the Downloads page for the available versions.

08Is the source code available?

Taftan is proprietary software. See the Terms of Use for its licence.

09What should I consider before sending sensitive content?

Consider access to both devices, your password and your surroundings. Read the personal risk notice before use.

Get started

Two devices. One shared password. No intermediary.
